Getting started
How much does a garden design cost?
A two-hour Walk-Round consultation costs £195 within Bath and £240 elsewhere in our area, including VAT and travel. Full design plans start at £1,450 for gardens up to about 80 m², and most plans for typical Bath and Bristol gardens come to between £1,950 and £3,800. You get a fixed fee in writing before we start.
Which areas do you cover?
We work across Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, west Wiltshire (Bradford-on-Avon, Corsham, Melksham, Chippenham, Lacock) and the southern Cotswolds as far as Stroud, Painswick and Tetbury. Consultations further out are possible with a travel supplement; build work stays within about 35 miles of the studio.
What happens at the first consultation?
A designer walks the garden with you for about two hours, looks at soil, aspect, levels and views, and talks through how you want to use the space. Within five working days you receive written notes, an annotated sketch and a list of around twenty plants that would suit. If you go on to a full design within three months, the consultation fee is deducted.
When is the best time to start planning?
Late summer and autumn. Design takes four to eight weeks, and booking a build slot in autumn means construction can happen over winter and planting in early spring or the following autumn, when plants establish best. Our spring build slots usually fill by the end of January.
Design & build
Can you build a design drawn by another designer?
Yes, provided the drawings include enough construction detail to price from. We visit, check the levels and drainage, and quote within about two weeks. If details are missing we will tell you what is needed and what it costs to produce.
How long does a garden build take?
A small courtyard usually takes three to five weeks on site. A typical rear garden with a new terrace, paths and planting takes six to eight weeks, and larger or sloping gardens with retaining walls can take ten weeks or more. Your quotation includes a week-by-week programme.
Do I need planning permission?
Most garden work does not need planning permission, but there are exceptions: raised decks over 30 cm, structures near boundaries, work to listed buildings and their curtilage, and trees in conservation areas — which covers much of Bath. We check before design is finalised and can prepare and submit applications for you.
Do you guarantee your work?
Hard landscaping built by our crew carries a ten-year structural guarantee. Plants we supply and plant are replaced free if they fail within six months, provided the watering guide has been followed. None of this affects your statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
Payments & contracts
How do deposits and payments work for a build?
We take a 20% deposit to reserve your build slot, 30% when we start on site to cover materials, staged payments at milestones set out in your contract, and the final 10% within seven days of practical completion. You never pay for work that has not yet been done, apart from the deposit and materials.
Can I cancel after I have signed?
Yes. If you sign a contract at home or online you have 14 days to cancel without giving a reason. If you ask us to start work inside those 14 days and then cancel, you pay only for the work done up to that point. Full details are in our terms and conditions.
Are your prices inclusive of VAT?
Yes. All prices on this website and in our quotations to homeowners include VAT at the current rate of 20%.
Planting & aftercare
Where do your plants come from?
Wherever possible from peat-free nurseries within about sixty miles of Bath, in Somerset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire. Locally grown plants arrive fresher, travel less, and are already used to our climate and soils.
Will I be able to look after the garden myself?
That is the aim. Every planting plan comes with a maintenance calendar written for that garden, and we design with the amount of time you tell us you have. If you would rather not, our maintenance team can visit seasonally or monthly.
What does a four-season care plan include?
Four day-long visits a year — usually March, June, September and December — covering pruning, cutting back, feeding, mulching, weeding, hedge cutting and a short written note on how the garden is doing. It costs £960 a year for gardens up to about 300 m², payable quarterly.
Still wondering about something?
Every garden is different, and some questions are easier to answer on site. Book a Walk-Round visit or call the studio on weekdays between 8:30 and 17:30.
