Design, build, planting and care — all under one roof

Six services, each priced clearly and including VAT. Use one on its own or combine them; most of our clients start with a Walk-Round visit and decide from there.

Service No. 01

Garden design consultation

The quickest way to get expert eyes on your garden. Many clients find a single visit is all they need to tackle the garden themselves; others use it as the first step towards a full design.

A designer spends around two hours with you on site, walking the garden, testing the soil, noting levels, aspect and drainage, and listening to how you want to use the space. We talk honestly about what is realistic for your budget and what could be done in stages.

Within five working days you receive written notes, an annotated sketch of the main ideas and a plant list chosen for your conditions.

What’s included

  • Two hours on site with a qualified designer
  • Soil and aspect assessment
  • Written notes and an annotated sketch
  • Plant list of around 20 suggestions with sources
  • Fee deducted from a full design booked within three months
Price (incl. VAT)

Duration
2-hour visit; notes within 5 working days

Full garden design plans

A complete, buildable design for your garden: the drawings a landscaper needs to price and build accurately, and the planting plan that brings it to life.

We begin with a full measured survey, including levels, existing trees, drains and services. From that we draw two concept layouts by hand and talk them through with you in person. Once you are happy with the direction, we develop a scaled master plan, construction details and a full planting plan with quantities.

You can take the finished plans to any contractor, or ask us to build them. Either way, you own a licence to use the design for your garden.

What’s included

  • Measured topographical survey
  • Site analysis and brief document
  • Two hand-drawn concept layouts
  • 1:50 master plan with materials
  • Planting plan and plant schedule with quantities
  • Construction details and a tender pack
  • Up to three rounds of revisions
Price (incl. VAT)
From £1,450 for gardens up to 80 m²; most plans £1,950–£3,800; larger and sloping sites by quotation
Duration
4–8 weeks from survey to final drawings
Who it’s for
New-build gardens, complete makeovers, listed and conservation-area properties, and anyone planning a significant investment who wants it done once and done well.

Landscaping build

Patios, paths, walls, steps and decking built by our own crew — never subcontracted — with a ten-year structural guarantee.

We build with materials that suit the place: sawn and riven Bath stone, blue-grey Pennant sandstone, reclaimed clay brick, self-binding gravel and FSC-certified oak and larch. Foundations and drainage are designed for the West Country’s heavy clay, so terraces stay level and dry.

Every build has a written quotation, a week-by-week programme and a single site lead. Your designer visits weekly, and you can reach Tom on his mobile throughout.

What’s included

  • Terraces and patios in natural stone or brick
  • Paths, steps and edging
  • Retaining and dry-stone walls
  • Timber and composite decking
  • Drainage, lighting cables and irrigation
  • Skip licences and parking suspensions arranged
  • 10-year structural guarantee
Price (incl. VAT)
From £8,500 for a small courtyard; typical rear-garden builds £18,000–£65,000
Duration
2–10 weeks on site, depending on size and access
Who it’s for
Clients with a Fernwick design, or with plans from another designer that include enough detail to price.

Planting design

Planting that suits your soil and light, looks good for as much of the year as possible, and fits the time you have to look after it.

Daniel or Eleanor visits to assess soil, drainage and light, then draws a planting plan to scale, with every plant named and counted. We design in layers — trees, shrubs, perennials, bulbs and ground cover — so there is always something happening, even in February.

We can supply and plant the scheme ourselves using peat-free plants from nurseries in Somerset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire, and every plan comes with a twelve-month care calendar written for that garden.

What’s included

  • Soil and site assessment
  • Scaled planting plan and plant schedule
  • Bulb and seasonal interest plan
  • Twelve-month maintenance calendar
  • Optional supply and planting by our team
  • Six-month replacement guarantee on plants we plant
Price (incl. VAT)
Planting plan from £650 for up to 30 m of border; supply and planting typically £45–£80 per m²
Duration
2–4 weeks for the plan; planting in spring or autumn
Who it’s for
Gardens with good bones but tired borders, new builds with bare soil, and anyone who wants more colour with less work.

Small urban & courtyard gardens

Small spaces need more design, not less. Our courtyard package covers design and build for gardens up to 25 m² in a single, fixed price.

Bath and Bristol are full of small, shady, awkward spaces: basement lightwells in Georgian terraces, yards behind Victorian cottages, roof terraces above shops. We design them as outdoor rooms, with built-in seating and storage, lighting, and planting chosen for the conditions.

Access is often through the house, so we plan deliveries carefully, protect floors and stairs, and keep disruption to a minimum.

What’s included

  • Survey and one hand-drawn design with revisions
  • Paving or decking, edging and drainage
  • Built-in benches, planters and storage
  • Lighting and an outdoor power point
  • Planting and large pots, planted up
  • Protection of floors and access routes
Price (incl. VAT)
From £6,900 design and build for spaces up to 25 m²
Duration
1 week design, 3–5 weeks on site
Who it’s for
Terraced houses, flats with outdoor space, basement lightwells and roof terraces in Bath, Bristol and the surrounding towns.

Seasonal garden maintenance

Gardens are never finished. Our maintenance team, led by Rosie, looks after gardens we have designed — and some we have not — so they mature the way they were meant to.

Choose a four-season care plan with day-long visits in March, June, September and December, or regular visits monthly or fortnightly. Each visit covers whatever the garden needs at that time of year: pruning, cutting back, feeding, mulching, weeding, hedge cutting and lawn care.

After each visit you get a short note on what was done and anything to keep an eye on. We take green waste away and compost it at a local site.

What’s included

  • Pruning, deadheading and cutting back
  • Weeding, feeding and mulching
  • Hedge and topiary cutting
  • Lawn care and edging
  • Green waste removed and composted
  • Short written note after each visit
Price (incl. VAT)
£44 per gardener-hour (minimum three hours); four-season care plan from £960 a year for gardens up to 300 m²
Duration
Year-round; seasonal, monthly or fortnightly visits
Who it’s for
Busy households, second-home owners, and anyone who wants their new garden to establish well in its first few years.

Deposits & staged payments

How paying for a build works

We never ask for the full price up front. Build projects are paid in stages that follow the work, set out in your contract before anything starts:

  1. 20% deposit when you sign, to reserve your slot in our build programme.
  2. 30% on the first day on site, covering stone, timber and other materials ordered for your garden.
  3. Staged payments at milestones agreed in advance — for example when the terrace is laid.
  4. The final 10% within seven days of practical completion, once you have walked the garden with us.

Your right to cancel

If you agree a contract with us at your home, by phone or online, the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 give you 14 days to change your mind. If you ask us to begin work within those 14 days and then cancel, you pay only for what has been done up to that point.

Design fees are invoiced in two parts: 40% when the survey is booked and 60% when the final drawings are delivered. Consultations are paid when you book.
